Steel Pony Farm Job Description

Steel Pony Farm is a chemical-free, mixed vegetable operation in Central Alberta. Our mission is to empower people to make healthy food choices by providing weekly food boxes for families in the Red Deer area and through serving local grocery stores and restaurants.

We have an exciting position available on our vegetable crew for a hardworking individual seeking fulfilling work this summer and fall.

This is a hands-on job that will give you a chance to be a part of all aspects of the day to day operations of the farm. You will work independently and as a part of a team to produce high quality vegetables. Your problem solving skills, determination, attention to detail and flexibility will all help you to be successful at this position.

Job Title: Vegetable Crew (Seasonal)

Reports to: Farm Manager

Job Purpose: Transplant, seed, maintain, and harvest vegetable crops


  • An “I can dot it!” and positive outlook is essential

  • Must excel at physical labour and enjoy the feeling of an honest day of work

  • Must be peace with repetitive tasks like weeding, transplanting and harvesting

  • Dexterity, speed and attention to detail

  • Adaptability - to weather, changing workflow, changing seasonal requirements

  • Ability to find efficiencies in work processes to be a part of creating improved workflow

  • Can add some joy to a team dynamic, but also work independently for extended periods

  • Must have own transportation to and from farm (15 minutes southeast of Red Deer)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Setup and maintain irrigation system

  • Start seedlings in plant nursery

  • Transplant and direct seed crops in field

  • Weed and otherwise maintain crops

  • Regularly inspect crops for ripeness, pests, disease etc

  • Harvest, grade, weigh and package crops

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoors in a variety of working conditions. Must be ready to work through rain, heat and cold

  • Variable work schedule based on seasonal requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically fit and strong

  • Ability to lift and walk with 50 lbs

  • Can to squat, kneel, bend and crouch for extended periods when necessary


  • Variable depending on the time of year.

  • Generally 40-45 hours/wk

  • Starting as soon as possible

  • Finishes mid to late October


  • Starting at $13.60/hr. Variable based on relevant experience.

  • Lots of free vegetables
